This Friday I\u2019ll be participating in the Digital Media and Learning Conference<\/a> in San Diego. I\u2019m speaking as part of a session titled \u201cOrality, Pedagogy, and New Media: How Children Develop Self-Awareness and Collective Consciousness.\u201d I\u2019m pasting the info below. Registration is closed, but if you\u2019re heading down there anyways, drop me a line.<\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n Orality, Pedagogy, and New Media: How Children Develop Self-Awareness and\u00a0Collective Consciousness<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n Location: Room 4004<\/p>\n Chair: Antero Garcia (University of California, Los Angeles)<\/p>\n Participants: Antero Garcia (University of California, Los Angeles), Greg Niemeyer\u00a0(University of California, Berkeley), Davida Herzl (Aclima), Dehanza Rogers (Cal State\u00a0Northridge), Scott Ruston (Arizona State University, Hugh Downs School of Human\u00a0Communication)<\/p>\n An analysis of the convergence of orality, pedagogy, and new media, this session looks\u00a0at how new technologies are still rooted in oral culture and the implications of this\u00a0distinction on pedagogy. Presenters will discuss and provide interactive opportunities\u00a0around ways these themes tie into game play, literacy development, data aggregation,\u00a0and DIY filmmaking. Alternate reality environmental game, the Black Cloud, will anchor\u00a0part of this presentation and allow real-time prediction and aggregation opportunities for\u00a0participants. Similarly, session participants will engage in cell-phone literacy\u00a0demonstrations, help author a FlipCam documentary, and engage in traditional\u00a0dialogue. Further, presenters will examine the role of radical transparency and collective\u00a0eco-intelligence as they disrupt existing measuring systems. As social media proliferates\u00a0and cell phones continue to overcome barriers within classrooms and informal learning\u00a0environments, the role of orality within education continues to be disregarded.\u00a0Reexamining new media\u2019s emphasis of an oral culture through text messages, status\u00a0updates, and twitter feeds, this interactive symposium provides analysis of orality as it\u00a0plays out in gaming, cell phone applications in a high school context, data aggregation,\u00a0and the role of documentary filmmaking. Looking into the connections between John\u00a0Dewey and Walter Ong, this symposium and its interactive dialogue help guide\u00a0practitioners and researchers towards expanded media and pedagogical opportunities\u00a0through orality.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Further down the road, I\u2019ll also be presenting with a group of friends at the Critical Teaching in Action Conference<\/a> on March 13.
