The thing about grad school is that there are often a whole bunch of articles and papers I\u2019ve read that aren\u2019t reflected on this list (they become part of the collective flotsam that is my EndNote library \u2013 itself another haphazard list of materials read). Why do I keep such a list? Most practically, because I\u2019ve come to accept that I have a terrible memory: flipping through the notebook, there are several titles I don\u2019t even remember (I read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Capacity-Theo-Ellsworth\/dp\/0979960924\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262290932&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a>? And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jude-Level-1-Julian-Gough\/dp\/1905847246\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262291015&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a>? Really?).<br \/>\nA few highlights in my year of reading:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Remains-Day-Kazuo-Ishiguro\/dp\/0679731725\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292216&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">The Remains of the Day<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jeff-Venice-Death-Varanasi-Novel\/dp\/0307377377\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292248&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/2666-Novel-Roberto-Bola\u00f1o\/dp\/0312429215\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292252&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">2666<\/a> were stunning novels by writers I\u2019d already adored.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jonathan-Strange-Norrell-Susanna-Clarke\/dp\/1608190862\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292392&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Strange &amp; Mr Norrell<\/a> was the epic fantasy fix I needed in this post-Potter world.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Asterios-Polyp-David-Mazzucchelli\/dp\/0307377326\" target=\"_blank\">Asterios Polyp<\/a> &amp; the works of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hey-Wait-Jason\/dp\/156097463X\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292286&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">Jason<\/a> renewed my faith in graphic novels.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bluets-Maggie-Nelson\/dp\/1933517409\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292603&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">Bluets<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Tennis-Court-Oath-Wesleyan-Classics\/dp\/0819510130\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292626&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">The Tennis Court Oath<\/a> (though I\u2019m still reading it and it\u2019s technically not counted in this list) have been making me want to get back to writing poetry.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mindstorms-Children-Computers-Powerful-Ideas\/dp\/0465046290\/ref=tmm_pap_title_1\" target=\"_blank\">Mindstorms<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Women-Dangerous-Things-George-Lakoff\/dp\/0226468046\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292267&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">Women, Fire, &amp; Dangerous Things<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/School-Build-Social-Arcturus-Paperbacks\/dp\/0809308789\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292262&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">Dare the School Build a New Social Order?<\/a> were older education related texts that were a refreshing breath of air.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Heres-Kicker-Conversations-Humor-Writers\/dp\/1582975051\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292721&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">And Here\u2019s the Kicker<\/a> made me start writing in my spare time again (and re-watch a ton of amazing comedies).<\/li>\n<li>And it was nice revisiting good friends <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/All-About-Love-New-Visions\/dp\/0060959479\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292440&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">bell hooks<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Franny-Zooey-J-D-Salinger\/dp\/0316769029\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262292452&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">J.D. Salinger<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As far as music goes, considering that I got this computer a third of the way through the year, my iTunes most played list serves as a useful indicator of what was what (how Squirrel Nut Zippers made it so high up the list is beyond me\u2026 though I think frequent use of the song to wind up Sadie may have something to do with it).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"
