These were both books that lingered long after I finished them. I highly recommend both.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/images4.penguinrandomhouse.com\/cover\/9780385550369\" alt=\"James by Percival Everett\" width=\"203\" height=\"307\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/images3.penguinrandomhouse.com\/cover\/9780593542101\" alt=\"Memory Piece by Lisa Ko\" width=\"204\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other fiction shoutouts include Kelly Link\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/239722\/the-book-of-love-by-kelly-link\/\">The Book of Love<\/a><\/em>, Rufi Thorpe&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/products\/margos-got-money-troubles-rufi-thorpe?variant=41107138183202\"><em>Margo\u2019s Got Money Troubles<\/em><\/a>, and Kaoru Takamura&#8217;s two-part epic, <a href=\"https:\/\/sohopress.com\/books\/lady-joker-vol-1\/\"><em>Lady Joker<\/em><\/a> (imagine a Michael Mann heist-y story set in \u201890s era Japan but with hundreds of pages that unfold slowly about the socioeconomic conditions that led to the heist. A glacial thriller that I hope leads to more of her work being translated into English.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/sohopress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Lady-Joker-low-res-397x600.jpg\" width=\"212\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Three essential non-fiction reads for understanding this present moment and the possible worlds to come: Ta-Nehisi Coates\u2019 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/653438\/the-message-by-ta-nehisi-coates\/\">The Message<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Vanessa Ang\u00e9lica Villareal\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/704670\/magicalrealism-by-vanessa-angelica-villarreal\/\"><em>Magical \/ Realism<\/em><\/a>, and Alexis Pauline Gumb&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9780374603274\/survivalisapromise\/\">Survival is a Promise.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9780374603274\/survivalisapromise\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/images4.penguinrandomhouse.com\/cover\/9780593230381\" alt=\"The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates\" width=\"174\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a>.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/images2.penguinrandomhouse.com\/cover\/9780593187142\" alt=\"Magical\/Realism by Vanessa Ang\u00e9lica Villarreal\" width=\"194\" height=\"293\" \/>\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/mpd-biblio-covers.imgix.net\/9780374603274.jpg?w=300dpr=1%201x,%20https:\/\/mpd-biblio-covers.imgix.net\/9780374603274.jpg?w=300dpr=2%202x,%20https:\/\/mpd-biblio-covers.imgix.net\/9780374603274.jpg?w=300dpr=3%203x\" alt=\"Survival Is a Promise\" width=\"194\" height=\"291\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Danez Smith\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graywolfpress.org\/books\/bluff\"><em>Bluff<\/em><\/a> was my favorite book of poetry this year (the source for the title of this post). It felt even more stylistically (and typographically) playful than their previous work, while still being something accessible for most readers.<\/p>\n<p>For <em>La Cuenta<\/em>, we interviewed some amazing authors over this past year. It was a pleasure to get to dig into some really incredible books including Silky Shah\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haymarketbooks.org\/books\/2213-unbuild-walls\"><em>Unbuild Walls<\/em><\/a>, Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodr\u00edguez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hachettebookgroup.com\/titles\/prisca-dorcas-mojica-rodriguez\/t%C3%ADas-and-primas\/9781668644362\/?lens=seal-press\"><em>Tias and Primas<\/em><\/a> (interview coming in January), Elizabeth Camarillo Gutierrez&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9781250277954\/mysideoftheriver\/\">My Side of the River<\/a><\/em>, and Bill Ong Hing\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beacon.org\/Humanizing-Immigration-P1976.aspx\"><em>Humanizing Immigration<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of music, sometime last year I finished watching <em>Reservation Dogs<\/em> and a song from Ted Lucas played near the end of one of the final episodes:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rQI33GHw8NI?si=3rMwl5zNUpcUh_9k\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d never heard of Lucas before, but his <a href=\"https:\/\/yogarecords.bandcamp.com\/album\/ted-lucas\">self titled album<\/a> has been a consistent go-to throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>In November, <a href=\"https:\/\/autechre.warp.net\/release\/476436-autechre-ae2022\">Autechre<\/a> released 12 (?!) different live albums. I am still working my way through the plethora of bloops recorded across the globe, but every set has been stunning. I\u2019m genuinely surprised not as many people have been raving about this.<\/p>\n<p>This year felt like a generally strong one, musically.
