They pile up as text messages to myself. Nouns and verbs and gerunds and false starts seeking what\u2019s not right in front of us.<\/p>\n<p>Lately, I\u2019ve been thinking about the quetzal. The mayan bird that refused capture. Wikipedia will tell you that the quetzal will simply die in captivity. However, the version that I was told was that, when the quetzal was caged, it would put itself to sleep and refuse to awaken. [I think the Guatemala national anthem speaks to this history: \u201cque tu pueblo con \u00e1nima fiera\/antes muerto que esclavo ser\u00e1.\u201d]<\/p>\n<p>What does the quetzal dream of?<\/p>\n<p>Walking around a high school in Southern California recently, I was reminded that\u2014regardless of how permanent school structures and policies may seem\u2014everything is temporary. There are literal cracks in the pavement and spaces for pushing up the stones of positivism that drive knowledge acquisition in U.S. schools. The time for forceful dreaming is now.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Untitled\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/anterobot\/51269788579\/in\/dateposted\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51269788579_759e06dd66_c.jpg\" alt=\"Untitled\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, when discussing the second Speculative Education Colloquium, I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericancrawl.com\/?p=1887\">offered a list<\/a> of reasons why these events needed to continue. The first three reasons that I wrote were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Because things aren\u2019t better.<\/li>\n<li>Because \u201cbetter\u201d isn\u2019t good enough when the purpose is freedom.<\/li>\n<li>Because education still isn\u2019t about dreaming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Refusing capture and snoozing through captivity: that feels like a promising way to live in service of liberation.
