And so, as with the past five years, I offer my annual rundown of books I read this year:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Books read in 2014: 157<\/strong><br \/>\nComics and graphic novels included in reading total: 26<br \/>\nBooks of poetry included in reading total: 3<br \/>\nBooks reread included in reading total: 3<br \/>\nAcademic &amp; Education related books included in reading total: 18<br \/>\nYA and Junior Fiction books included in reading total: 10<br \/>\nRoleplaying Game-related books (rules, modules, settings &#8230; because <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericancrawl.com\/?p=1221\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a>): 25<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A few thoughts (As usual, here are my posts on books read in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericancrawl.com\/?p=1317\" target=\"_blank\">2013<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericancrawl.com\/?p=1141\" target=\"_blank\">2012<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericancrawl.com\/?p=971\" target=\"_blank\">2011<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericancrawl.com\/?p=616\" target=\"_blank\">2010<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericancrawl.com\/?p=450\" target=\"_blank\">2009<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think I had more fun reading this year than the solid 1-2-3 punch of Jeff Vandermeer&#8217;s Southern Reach Trilogy (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Annihilation-Novel-Southern-Reach-Trilogy-ebook\/dp\/B00EGJ32A6\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008523&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=southern+reach\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Annihilation<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Authority-Novel-Southern-Reach-Trilogy\/dp\/0374104107\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008523&amp;sr=8-3&amp;keywords=southern+reach\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Authority<\/em><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Acceptance-Novel-Southern-Reach-Trilogy\/dp\/0374104115\/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008523&amp;sr=8-4&amp;keywords=southern+reach\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Acceptance<\/em><\/a>). There&#8217;s heaps of praise for the trilogy and now packaged as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Area-Southern-Annihilation-Authority-Acceptance\/dp\/0374261172\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008523&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=southern+reach\" target=\"_blank\">single volume<\/a> for the holidays, it&#8217;s a great way to get lost for a week or two.<\/p>\n<p>I read a handful of music-related books. Some highlights include the slim volume about <em>Dangerous<\/em> that\u00a0I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericancrawl.com\/?p=1463\" target=\"_blank\">previously blogged<\/a> about,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/KLF-Chaos-Magic-Music-Money-ebook\/dp\/B00ABFHOS0\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008643&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=klf\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> look at techno-pranksters the KLF, a Q&amp;A for getting\u00a0lost in the mythos of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Will-Oldham-Bonnie-Prince-Billy\/dp\/0393344339\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008640&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=will+oldham+bonnie\" target=\"_blank\">Will Oldham\u00a0and Bonnie &#8220;Prince&#8221; Billy<\/a>, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lets-Go-Crazy-Prince-Making\/dp\/1476776725\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008842&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=let%27s+go+crazy\" target=\"_blank\">book length work<\/a>\u00a0about the greatest album\/film\/musician of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Though this year was pretty light on poetry for me, Claudia Rankine&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Citizen-American-Lyric-Claudia-Rankine\/dp\/1555976905\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008876&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=citizen+claudia\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Citizen<\/em><\/a> felt like one of the most timely, necessary reads of the year.<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0I only picked it up\u00a0in the past two weeks, Richard McGuire&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Here-Richard-McGuire\/dp\/0375406506\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008645&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=here\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Here<\/em><\/a> is the best graphic novel I read. Following the thousands+ history of a single room, generations of families, prehistoric animals, and futuristic guesses are offered in windowed comic panels, like the pop-up windows of &#8217;90s era online browsing. The premise sounds like (and occasionally literally is) watching paint dry on a wall. It&#8217;s unlike anything else you&#8217;ll read.<\/p>\n<p>The two best academic books I read are accessible and I heartily recommend them for a general readership. danah boyd&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Its-Complicated-Social-Lives-Networked\/dp\/0300166311\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008661&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=it%27s+complicated\" target=\"_blank\"><em>It&#8217;s Complicated<\/em><\/a> takes more than a decade of research on the digital lives of youth and makes it clear how young people are communicating, learning, and sharing today; danah&#8217;s work here has been foundational in my own research and\u00a0<em>It&#8217;s Complicated<\/em>\u00a0offers necessary perspective on a larger conversation about technology, learning, privacy, and socialization.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Run-Fugitive-Fieldwork-Encounters-Discoveries\/dp\/022613671X\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008650&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=on+the+run\" target=\"_blank\"><em>On The Run<\/em><\/a> is an equally-long-in-the-making ethnography about\u00a0young men trying to avoid the U.S. legal system. It&#8217;s a compelling book with vibrant characters, <em>Wire-<\/em>like escapades,\u00a0haunting scenes, and the troubling fact that this is all real and\u00a0experienced daily by urban youth across the country.<\/p>\n<p>I finished Isaacson&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Innovators-Hackers-Geniuses-Created-Revolution\/dp\/147670869X\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008896&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=innovators\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Innovators<\/em><\/a>\u00a0earlier this month. It was fun and exactly what I expected. If you can&#8217;t remember why Jim Henson is such an amazing and generous innovator in his own right, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jim-Henson-Brian-Jay-Jones\/dp\/0345526112\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008899&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=jim+henson\" target=\"_blank\">biography<\/a> that came out a few years ago will remind you. The lessons that Henson&#8217;s life illustrate have stayed with me throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My year of other media consumption was pretty\u00a0predictable. D&#8217;Angelo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Black-Messiah-DAngelo-Vanguard\/dp\/B00QR7ZN16\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008508&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=black+messiah\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Black Messiah<\/em><\/a> and St. Vincent&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/St-Vincent\/dp\/B00H7MW2SM\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420008509&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=st+vincent\" target=\"_blank\">self titled<\/a> record are constantly on rotation. <a href=\"http:\/\/serialpodcast.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Serial<\/em><\/a> is eating my brain. <em>Boyhood<\/em> made me cry while watching it on an airplane.
